I have a line from Newfoundland before it joined Canada and records are slim. I have brickwalls in my tree, it's normal. I made both an ascendancy and descendency chart for them.

Also wanted to know if there was anyone else alive they were related to with the same name. The family name isn't common and they wanted to know if it was foreign or something. They were looking for specific information and that's where I found it. SIL's husband's family only into the 1800s. Stepfather's tree went back to 1600s England. My husband's tree goes back much further because I found a connection to English royalty.

My own tree goes back to the early 1500s on the Dutch line, mostly because the Dutch have fantastic free online records going back that far. I've done my tree, my husband's tree, my stepfather's tree, and my sister-in-law's husband's tree. So I came here to ask, What do you guys search for when you’re doing your trees? How far you can do back? Your cousins? Finding connections to your known relatives? Do you do your friends/in-laws family trees? Did one of my great grandparents cheat or had a second marriage I can’t find? I am super lost on my search and I really don’t want a break, but maybe a break from my own stuff. I’ve tried to look at all my matches on Ancestry to redefine my tree, but my 4th cousins suggestions all have trees that are no similar to mine. Also made a big deal about me having living people in my tree even though they show as private. I’ve tried contacting her but she pretty much said “if you’re not already apart of the family every day, then it’s best not to intrude”. One of my cousins on my moms side is a lot older and much more into genealogy (only for my moms side obviously). Also my great grandparents and their descendants, all to find cousins I have never heard of and will more than likely never hear from without me reaching out first. I’ve tried to add my grandparents siblings and their descendants.

I’ve tried to add as many photos do my trees. I’ve tried to extend my maternal line all the way back as I can. I have tried to find the origin of my last name but it gets lost past my great grandfather who immigrated from modern day Belarus in ~1907. I know it’s all up to me and what I want to do, but I just feel like I am just spending time staring at things I’ve had completed for over a year. Getting pretty overwhelmed doing my tree.
